Dan Venton’s ’73 Bug

“I guess the bug is special to me as it represents a strong bond with my Dad forged as a primary school kid in the ’70’s. We had a VW camper and went everywhere in it, including ski trips to Austria. It was only natural when I turned 17 if get an air cooled VW too. I found a bay camper on a farm with no engine. Towed it home and fully rebuilt it with Dad. This has flowed through my life and led to the Beetle. It was owned from new by one of my teachers, it then passed to another, then my sister then me. It has a really comprehensive history so I know exactly what’s been done and where it’s been! ¬†When it came to me it was a little tired still it’s had a light freshen up, while retaining the original trim to maintain a fair amount of patina. I then lowered it, just a tad (!) and fitted original Empi sprint star wheels to it. I wanted it to look totally right for the period. I also aged the rear end slightly as I prefer the late ’60’s styling. The inside is next on the list… It is used¬†whenever possible and is pretty much my daily in the summer months. It never ceases to make me smile and remind me of that stoked 17 year old I once was!” – Dan Venton
